Rio Seco Waterfall

"We travel, initially, to lose ourselves; and we travel next to find ourselves. We travel to open our hearts and eyes and learn more about the world than our newspapers will accommodate. We travel to bring what little we can, in our ignorance and knowledge, to those parts of the globe whose riches are differently dispersed. And we travel, in essence, to become young fools again- to slow time down and get take in, and fall in love once more."
-Pico Iyer

Rio Seco was the first waterfall I've ever hiked to in Trinidad. I remember forcing my family to go on a hike with me on a Sunday as my Saturdays were filled with MBA classes for the next year! We went with a local hiking group, Road Trip TT (link below) who was really great to us. After waking up 4:00 am, packing a bag and driving from South to Mt. Hope to meet my family, friends and fellow hikers, we set off on a bus to our destination. It was a beautiful day, not too hot or cold and the hike itself wasn't too tough for a beginner hiker. The toughest part was climbing over a fallen tree but other than that, the walk was pleasant, the air clean and it was a very serene, peaceful experience. We crossed two small rivers that were quite lovely before getting to the waterfall. If you hate hiking, the waterfall more than makes up for the effort exerted. The waterfall is about 15 feet tall where adrenaline junkies scale the rocks and dive off into a deep spacious pristine emerald pool. If you aren't a swimmer, the water near the rocks are shallow but I recommend wearing a life jacket and swimming in the refreshing icy pool.

Rio Seco Waterfall is located on the Northeastern coast of Trinidad, right after Matura and opposite Sylabia Beach.

  1. A truly great spot to hang out and soak in the water. The hike to Rio Seco is quite easy about 30-45 mins depending on your pace. Say when you are going again and I'm in....lol
