Asa Wright Nature Centre

"Through travel I first became aware of the outside world; it was through travel that I found my own introspective way into becoming part of it."
-Eudora Welty

Asa Wright Nature Centre is one of the most under-rated destinations in Trinidad. In addition to its extremely diverse fauna, the nature centre is home to 108 mammals, 460 birds, 55 reptiles, 25 amphibians and 617 butterflies. The property is beautiful and rustic and leads to a huge veranda where you can see humming birds up close as they drink from bird feeders hanging on the roof. Each visit to the nature centre is unique as you never know what you're going to stumble upon. On my last visit to the nature centre, one of the tour guides found a snake on the property and was showing it off to the guests and before I knew it, I volunteered to have it wrap around my arm. It was definitely a memorable experience! I found the nature walk to be very peaceful and informative as the tour guide was very knowledgeable and had a friendly personality. A short walk from the property, there is also a small waterfall known as the Clearwater pool where visitors can bathe in. I recommend checking it out after the nature walk.

Asa Wright Nature Centre is located 1,200 feet in the mountains of the Northern Range, seven miles north of Arima and comprises about 1,500 acres of mostly forested land.

  1. It is a bird watchers and nature lovers paradise. It is also home to the Guacharo or "oilbird" that lives in the caves there.
